Castles
There are also many castles in Santorini. They were built in the middle ages by the islanders to protect them against pirates. The largest castle, Scaros is located below Imerovigli and was built by the Venetians. Rocka is another castle located on the peak of the rock, and there is another castle located right below it. There are also Castelia which are smaller castles located in the villages, but most of them were damaged in the earthquake of 1956.
