The Greek breakfast is just a cup of coffee and bread with butter. If you find a place where breakfast is served it means tourists are expected. The principal meal of the day is dinner which starts around 9.30 p.m., and restaurants stay open until 2 a.m.
The most abundant type of eatery is the tavern, where you will find basic Greek dishes of grilled or roasted meats with salads, though not always a menu. Waiters in traditional places will rather recite the dishes available, a practice which ensures that the offer is brought up-to-date. The Greek cuisine is famous all around the world both thanks to its healthiness and the number of Greeks living abroad and owning a Greek restaurant. Yet to make sure you know what you order you may be shown to the kitchen to see what is cooking. Fish and meat are usually priced by weight, so that size you choose there in the kitchen becomes your responsibility when the bill arrives.
In a proper restaurant the food and service may be a bit more formal than service in a tavern, but don’t expect elegant, sophisticated dining except in the deluxe establishments.
Regarding tipping in restaurants, it should be said that by law a 13% service charge is figured into the price of a meal, so you don’t have to leave any additional tip, but it is customary to do so. If the service was good, just leave about 10% or more.
